Youth Learn to Play Hockey

Our Learn to Play hockey program is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey to beginning players. Our program follows the USA Hockey American Development Model guidelines which promote high activity through fun, station based practices and games.Each week builds off the previous week’s lesson and introduces a new hockey skill for the players to learn. Power skating, balance, and edge control are the primary focal points and will be practiced each week. Other skills taught include puck control, passing, shooting and preliminary game sense.

  • Full gear is Required for ALL classes (Helmet w/cage, Gloves, Hockey Pants, Athletic Cup, Hockey Skates, Elbow Pads, Shin Pads and Stick)
  • Gear Rental is available for $55
  • No prior hockey or skating experience is necessary


Introduction – Ages 3-4

Tuesday & Thursday 5:00 to 6:00pm

Cost: $175 for 10 weeks

Learn to Play Hockey Intro is for the beginning skater and offers an introduction to skating with hockey skates. Instruction will focus on balance, agility, coordination, body position, and proper movements.  Class will utilize activities to insure the learning process is FUN and enjoyable.

Level 1

Tuesday & Thursday 5:00 to 6:00pm
Cost: $245 for 10 weeks 

Participants in Learn to Play Hockey 1 are new to skating and hockey. Level 1 is for the beginning hockey player who has successfully passed Learn to Play Hockey Intro or equivalent.  Skaters who have participated in a Learn to Skate program should register for Learn to Play Hockey 1. Level 1 builds on skating skills developed in the Intro class. Instructors will work with students on edge control, forward striding, and backward striding.  The basics of puck control will be introduced during the class.

Level 2

Tuesday & Thursday 5:00 to 6:00pm
Cost: $245 for 10 weeks 

Learn to Play Hockey 2 is for skaters who have completed Level 1 or possess a similar skill level (as recommended by coaching staff).  This session will focus on strengthening existing skating while transitioning from forwards to backwards smoothly.  Students will learn to master forwards and backwards crossovers and edge control.  This class will begin to focus on stick handling, puck control while skating, passing as well as shooting.  Skaters will be divided by skill level during this session to better serve their skill level.  Players with enough skill and comfort with the game will progress into the Learn to Play Hockey 3.

Level 3

Tuesday & Thursday 5:00 to 6:00pm
Cost: $245 for 10 weeks

Learn to Play Hockey 3 is for players that have completed Learn to Play Hockey 2 or have considerable background in the game of hockey.  Skills are further developed in preparation for introduction to game situations and Association play.  Players will learn proper game etiquette, hockey terminology as well as greater individual skill development in order to move to the next level of team play.



All participants must have a current Sportsplex Membership card $17.50

Ages 5-15 participants have 2 extra practices per week during our Stick N Puck sessions on Wednesdays 12:00-1:15pm and Fridays 3:00-4:45pm.

Ages 3-4 participants have 2 extra practices per week during the Public Skate Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00-4:45pm.
